Hi
everyone, my name is Brianto Hanitio and I'm originally come from Indonesia,
this is my third year living here in
San Francisco. Right now I am currently
enrolled in San Francisco State
University. This is my second semester here in SFSU, I transferred from City
College of San Francisco last spring and I really like this school so far
(other than the budget cut of course). My dream was to become a car designer
or any kind of jobs that related to car, because I love cars and all the
modifications. However, in Indonesia car industry is totally different than in
United States, Europe, and Japan. In Indonesia the labor fee is very low, last
time I checked a car mechanic will only get about $500/month which is not enough for you to have a good life.
I feel that there is no point paying all
of these money, but end up getting paid that low. Anyway, I end up
choosing Information System as my major because I think that this major has a really good prospect and it also supported with the fact that my dad really encourages me to
study this major. However though, I feel most people still unfamiliar with this major. Most people might have
heard of it before, but never really understand what can you expect from an Information System graduate and what
Information System do in our life. Most of people assume that
information system and computer science are basically the same thing. Well
true, both of them study computer,
but they have so many differences that each of them have their own strength and uniqueness. Information system focuses more on the
organization itself, how will a software that has been developed before can
help organization to be more effective and efficient. Many people do not realize
that Information System is everywhere, from BART station, ATM, online banking to most of the websites we use daily (San Francisco State University - Information System Homepage). Information systems
are a collection of data that being linked and grouped together to give a
desired or requested outcome or information. The computer software or programs
that usually being used by people who work in information system field are
Business System Analyst, Visible Analyst, Visual Studio, and many other more
programs. So, basically the main difference of Information System and Computer
Science is the focuses, Information System focuses on the business itself,
whereas Computer Science focuses on the science on creating the software and
programs. What’s the difference between
Information Systems (IS); Computer Science (CS); and Electrical Engineering
(EE)?
This article provides a table in which
will explain some core differences between Information System and Computer
Science. The author of this article states how the core skill on Information
System major is more into problem solving rather than logic which is definitely
suit my hobby and interest. Well, I hope that this post give you a general idea
about who I am, what my interests are, and especially what this blog will
discuss about.
I never really knew what the Information Systems major was exactly. So I to my understanding, you determine if new technologies that are create by computer science majors are profitable or worthwhile?
ReplyDeleteCorrect me if I'm wrong Brianto. Anjelia, I think information systems customize software to function better within a business. Computer science creates the software, like excel. Then info systems personnel organizes what functions to use in the software.Info systems can determine which software is worthwhile by discussing what goals the company is trying to achieve, like if the company should purchase Microsoft Excel or Access. However, the main purpose is to adjust whatever system they pick accordingly.
ReplyDeleteBrain maybe you can incorporate your fascination with designing cars and your information systems expertise together. Maybe you could get a job altering software's that design cars for a automotive company.
It is good to know someone who wants to pursue a career in information system since it seems that a lot of people are able to get jobs easily. But since working on cars is different in the U.S. than in Indonesia, have you considered researching about what are benefits of working as a mechanic in the U.S.? Just like Mark has mentioned, that would great if you can incorperate your field of study with something that you are interested it, so that way, you are able to have the best of two worlds of having a good career and loving cars.
ReplyDeleteI noticed you stated that the wage is really low in Indonesia when it comes to cars, so is that the reason why you chose not to major in a field related to cars? Would you be planning to move back to Indonesia when you are finished with school? I think that if it is something that calls your attention then maybe you should give it a second glance. I never knew what majoring in information system consisted of, but now after reading your blog I do. It is interesting to know how many of our every day things consist of information system, but it completely makes sense. I think Mark makes a good point of maybe combining both fields into one since you have a passion for cars. I think that it is always best to end up doing something your passionate about because it is something you have to wake up every morning to do and you do not want to wake up every morning hating to go to work!
